Lila's Surgery, This Week

Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges our way, and for my family, that challenge comes this week in the form of orthopedic surgery. My daughter, now nine years old, is no stranger to the operating room. Her upcoming surgery in Boston will be her sixth, and the impact it has on her and our family is profound. In this blog post, I'd like to share our journey, the emotions, the disruptions, and the strength it takes to navigate through these challenging times.

A Brave Young Warrior:

Our daughter, with her contagious smile and unwavering spirit, has shown us what true bravery means. At the tender age of nine, she has already faced more surgeries than most adults. Her courage, despite her inability to communicate verbally, is nothing short of inspiring. It's scary for her, not being able to express her fears or discomfort, but her resilience is a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

The Family's Emotional Rollercoaster:

As parents, watching your child go through multiple surgeries is emotionally draining. The constant worry and the fear of the unknown can be overwhelming. But it's in these moments that we find the strength within ourselves to support our daughter and each other. Our family has become a tight-knit unit, always there for one another, and the love that binds us has grown stronger through each surgery.

The Disruption to Daily Life:

Pediatric orthopedic surgeries disrupt the normal rhythm of daily life. We've had to adapt to a new routine filled with hospital visits, therapy sessions, and the endless paperwork that comes with medical care. Balancing work, school, and other commitments becomes a complex puzzle, but we manage because we have no other choice. Our daughter's health and well-being are the top priorities.

The Challenges of Accommodations:

One of the major challenges we face is the lack of accommodations, both at home and in our van. Our daughter requires specialized equipment, but finding the right resources and funding can be a daunting task. We've had to become advocates, fighting for the adaptations that make our daughter's life more comfortable and safe. The lack of accessibility and understanding in society is a hurdle we are committed to overcoming.

Finding Strength in Community:

Throughout our journey, we have discovered the incredible strength that lies in the support of our community. Friends, family, and even strangers have rallied around us, offering help, advice, and a listening ear. Their kindness and understanding have made all the difference in our lives, and we are eternally grateful.
